Disconnect

I saw you on the elevator the other day. You didn’t notice me. We were both standing there with our phones, pretending the other person didn’t exist. You know the situation I’m describing: eyes down, body turned slightly away. I caught myself doing it again, and I thought, how did this become normal?

We’ve built a world that keeps us numb to each other. We call it convenience, but really it’s avoidance. It’s become scary to even think about interacting with a stranger in person in passing. I’m not trying to save society here. Just reminding myself, and maybe you too: look up. Even when it’s awkward. Especially when it’s awkward.
