Is the Balloon Museum Really a Museum?

A few months ago my Instagram feed started getting bombarded with posts about the soon-to-open Balloon Museum in Wynwood. It served as another in a long line of irritating instances where gimmicky attractions pose as cultural institutions and everyone seems to just accept it. So I finally put some of my thoughts on the topic down and the final article was published on Jitney Books here:

The short version is that I don’t believe that particular attraction deserves the name Museum (along with many others that use it). It’s a decently executed concept, that I personally believe is overpriced for what you get (ticket prices range from $31-$39 depending; for comparison you can score FL resident multi-day passes for $59 per day). Some of the exhibits are more interesting than others, and the last one you visit is a barely veiled photo opportunity catering to people’s desire to all showcase the same facades on their Instagram or Dating Profiles.
