Here Today, Gone Tomorrow
It was here last time I passed the park, the painted kid sitting at the top of the fence, holding a kite caught in the trees that hung low across the wall. The mural, one of five painted by Seth Globepainter as part of a project in 2019, was a hidden gem. One that wasn’t meant for the street art hunting fans, but for the locals who used the park every day. A small but powerful reminder for people to tune in to the child within them; a reflection of every child who looked up and noticed it there.
But yesterday I drove by and it was gone. Blank gray wall, like it never happened.
The thing about street art is, it’s always on borrowed time. Layers over layers, each artist making space for the next, or for “progress”. It’s easy to romanticize the impermanence, but sitting in my car at the light after passing it, I was stuck in the loss I felt.
And eventually, the light turned green, and I drove on, the feelings of sadness slipping away behind me as I went.
