Smooth Transitions: From Vacation Back To Reality
Why is it that when we get back from vacation it always feels like we’ve been away for twice as long as we actually were? It’s like the theory of relativity should be updated to reflect that time passes at double speed on vacation compared to day-to-day life.
The reasons are obvious: time flies when you’re having fun, you pay less attention to schedules and deadlines, and you’re often encountering novelty at a higher rate than when you’re at home, stuck in routine.
But how can we minimize the post-vacation blues effect? Should we try to incorporate the vacation mentality into our regular days? Or insert bits of routine into our vacation to help smooth the transition? Probably a combination of both.
Here are some things I’ve tried, with varying degrees of consistency and success:
- Buffer day at home: Schedule time to unpack, rest, and regroup before jumping back into work.
- Tidy your space ahead: I try not to leave my apartment in chaos when I leave, and generally unpack and clear out vacation clutter within a day or two of getting home.
- Add small novelty to daily life: Try a new coffee shop or change your commute; small changes can boost mood and focus.
- Plan mini-vacation moments: Make space for a fun dinner, day trip, or creative activity you wouldn’t normally prioritize.
